A young settler named Balthus encounters Conan, who has become a scout at Fort Tuscelan on the border of the Bossonian Marches and the Pictish lands. A Pictish wizard, Zogar Sag, is gathering the Picts to wage war, and the desperate fort commander asks Conan to stop him. Conan, Balthus, and a team of scouts venture into the wilderness, where they face Zogar Sag's dark magic and monstrous creatures, leading to a battle for survival against the Picts.
